Still booking Delta with SkyMiles? You're overpaying

The short answer

Delta routinely charges more SkyMiles for its own flights than its partners charge for the same seat. Before transferring bank points to SkyMiles, price the exact Delta flight number in Air France/KLM Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, which sell the identical departure and accept transfers from five bank programs instead of one.

In August 2026 I saved two versions of one flight to Acru: Salt Lake City to Los Angeles on September 16, 2026, Delta nonstop, first class, out at 10:55 PM. Delta wanted 28,000 SkyMiles. Air France/KLM Flying Blue sold the same departure for 17,000 miles. Both carried $5.60 in taxes, against a $266 cash fare.

Acru Saved Trips showing one Delta flight from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles priced at 28,000 Delta SkyMiles and at 17,000 Air France KLM Flying Blue miles
One 10:55 PM Delta departure, saved twice. The cash column reports whatever each search returned for that row: the award taxes on the first, the flight's $266 cash fare on the second.

The lightning bolt on the second row is a Citi transfer bonus, 20% to Flying Blue, that ran until August 22, 2026. It did not move the award price. Flying Blue wanted 17,000 miles either way, and the bonus only meant 14,000 Citi ThankYou points covered them. Take the promotion out entirely and the comparison still stands: 17,000 miles against 28,000 for the same seat.

Every price in this piece belongs to August 2026 and September 2026 and is a worked example, not a fare you can go and book. Award pricing on all three programs moves daily. The reason the gap exists, which is that Delta's partners sell Delta's seats on their own terms, is not tied to any promotion.

Why is the same Delta seat cheaper in another program?

Delta is a SkyTeam member alongside Air France and KLM, and a joint venture partner of Virgin Atlantic. All three sell award seats on Delta-operated flights. What differs is how each one prices them. Delta's SkyMiles awards track the cash fare, so an expensive ticket becomes an expensive award. Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club price partner flights on their own terms, which means their number does not follow Delta's fare up.

The practical consequence: the more the cash ticket costs, the wider the gap tends to be. A cheap domestic seat may price similarly everywhere. A first-class or long-haul seat is where the difference stops being marginal.

Three Delta flights priced in SkyMiles and in a partner program, August 2026 and September 2026

Los Angeles to London Heathrow, economy31,000 miles + $3199,000 miles + $164.50 (Virgin Atlantic)22,000 miles and $154.50

The transatlantic row is the one worth staring at. Virgin Atlantic asked for less than a third of the miles and roughly half the cash. That last pair was priced by route and date rather than by a single confirmed flight number, so read it as the shape of the problem rather than a promise about one departure. The Salt Lake City and Austin rows are the same flight in both columns.

SkyMiles costs more before you even reach the booking

There is a second penalty that never appears in the award price. Delta is the only one of these three programs reachable from a single bank currency, and it is the only one that costs money to reach.

What each program costs to reach with bank points

Delta SkyMilesAmex Membership Rewards only$0.0006 per point, capped at $99
Air France-KLM Flying BlueAmex, Chase, Capital One, Citi, BiltNone
Virgin Atlantic Flying ClubAmex, Chase, Capital One, Citi, BiltNone

American Express charges that excise tax offset fee on transfers to US airline programs, which covers Delta. Foreign carriers are exempt, so Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic cost nothing to reach. On the 28,000-point Salt Lake City transfer that fee is about $17, paid for the privilege of buying the more expensive award.

The reach matters more than the fee. If your points sit in Chase, Capital One, Citi or Bilt, SkyMiles is not a currency you can reach at all, while the two programs that price this seat lower are one 1:1 transfer away from every one of them.

How do you check a Delta flight before you transfer?

  1. Find the Delta flight you want and note the flight number, date and cabin, not just the route.
  2. Price that exact flight in Air France/KLM Flying Blue and in Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. Read the miles and the cash taxes together, because a lower award price can carry higher surcharges.
  3. Confirm the seat is actually bookable in the cheaper program. Partner availability is narrower than Delta's own.
  4. Transfer only the points that booking needs, then book immediately. Bank transfers are generally one way.

What you give up booking through a partner

Delta is not the only airline whose own program is the expensive way to buy its seats. The same discipline applies to the five programs that share the Avios currency, where one partner award can price thousands of points apart depending on which login you book it through.

The cheaper price is real, and so are the trade-offs. None of these are reasons to skip the comparison, but they belong in the decision.

What changes here, and what does not

Delta's own website is the most expensive place to buy a Delta seat surprisingly often. The seat does not change. Only the login you book it through does.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to book Delta flights with Flying Blue or Virgin Atlantic miles?

Frequently, yes. Delta prices SkyMiles awards against the cash fare, while Air France/KLM Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club price partner awards on their own terms, so the same Delta departure can cost noticeably fewer miles through a partner. It is not automatic, which is why the comparison has to be run on the specific flight rather than assumed.

Can you book Delta flights with Air France/KLM Flying Blue miles?

Yes. Delta, Air France and KLM are SkyTeam members and transatlantic joint venture partners, so Flying Blue sells award seats on Delta-operated flights, including domestic US routes.

Can you book Delta flights with Virgin Atlantic points?

Yes. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club sells award seats on Delta-operated flights. Virgin is not a SkyTeam member, but it partners with Delta directly and is part of the same transatlantic joint venture.

Which credit card points transfer to Delta SkyMiles?

Among the major transferable bank currencies, only American Express Membership Rewards moves to Delta SkyMiles, at 1:1. Chase, Capital One, Citi and Bilt points cannot reach SkyMiles at all. All five of those currencies transfer 1:1 to both Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.

Does Amex charge a fee to transfer points to Delta?

Yes. American Express applies an excise tax offset fee of $0.0006 per point, capped at $99, on transfers to US airline programs including Delta SkyMiles. Transfers to foreign carriers such as Air France/KLM and Virgin Atlantic carry no such fee.

What do you give up by booking a Delta flight through a partner program?

The ticket is issued by the program you booked with, so its change, cancellation and redeposit rules apply rather than Delta's, and some management tasks cannot be done on delta.com. Partner award availability is also narrower than what Delta sells itself, so the cheaper price is only useful when the seat is actually released.
