One flight, two Avios prices: compare programs first

The short answer

Avios is a single currency shared by British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar Airways and Finnair, and those programs do not price the same partner flight alike. Before moving bank points, price the exact flight in each linked program, then transfer into whichever one charges least.

Do not book the first Avios price you are shown. British Airways surfaces most often in award search tools, which makes it the easiest price to overpay.
Avios move between linked British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar Airways and Finnair accounts, so the cheapest program is reachable even if your bank does not transfer to it directly.
Open and link the Avios accounts before you need them. Qatar Airways and Finnair require accounts at least 30 days old, and Iberia blocks transfers for the first 90 days.
Search first, compare second, transfer last. Bank-point transfers are generally final, and award space can vanish while you wait.

In August 2026 an Acru customer needed a Thanksgiving flight from Phoenix to Boston. Acru found a nonstop American Airlines award through British Airways for 22,000 Avios, compared with a $264 cash fare. With Amex's 30% transfer bonus, booking it would require transferring 17,000 Membership Rewards points.

Amex was offering a 30% transfer bonus to British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus through September 27, 2026. During that promotion, 1,000 Membership Rewards points became 1,300 Avios.

British Airways was not the end of the search. Qatar Airways priced the same American-operated award at 16,000 Avios plus $4.50. Because Amex transfers in 1,000-point increments, the customer sent 13,000 Amex points to British Airways and received 16,900 Avios. They moved 16,000 Avios to Qatar Airways and booked there, leaving 900 Avios in British Airways. That saved 4,000 Amex points on the one-way award. After the fee, the redemption came to about 2 cents per Amex point. The return was available for the same 16,000 Avios.

The 30% Amex bonus and the exact prices above belong to August 2026. Read them as one worked example. The reason the booking saved points, which is that five programs share Avios and price partner awards differently, is not tied to any promotion and applies every time you book.

Which airlines share Avios, and how do you move points between them?

Avios is shared across several loyalty programs. British Airways lets members transfer Avios between linked British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar Airways and Finnair accounts. British Airways, Iberia, Qatar Airways and Finnair are oneworld members. Aer Lingus is not, but it uses the same Avios currency.

If you are planning a trip and starting to see promising award availability, create the relevant Avios accounts now. Qatar Airways and Finnair require accounts to be at least 30 days old before linking, while Iberia blocks transfers during the first 90 days. Use the same name, email address and date of birth on every account. Then, when the right seat appears, you can move your Avios and book instead of waiting for an account to become eligible.

Why does the same flight cost different Avios in each program?

Those programs do not always price the same partner flight equally. They can also show different fees or availability. Acru surfaced the usable British Airways award, which was the signal to check the exact flight elsewhere. Qatar charged 6,000 fewer Avios per direction. With the 30% Amex bonus and 1,000-point transfer increments, that reduced the Amex transfer from 17,000 to 13,000 points. If both legs price the same way, the round trip saves 12,000 Avios, or 8,000 Amex points.

The same check matters more as the cabin price grows. The customer also saved a business-class option to Geneva for a New Year's ski trip. Before transferring for a larger award, they can compare the same itinerary across the Avios programs. Even a small pricing difference can save several thousand points.

How do you compare an award across Avios programs?

Find the award and note the operating airline, flight, date and cabin.
Search that exact flight through the relevant Avios programs. Compare both the Avios price and the cash fees.
Once the waiting period ends, link your Avios accounts. In this case, the path was Amex to British Airways to Qatar Airways.
Once the seat is confirmed, transfer only the points you need, move the Avios into the program with the better price and book immediately.

Do not move a large balance only because a bonus is available. Bank-point transfers are generally final, and award space can disappear. Search first, compare second, then transfer.

What changes here, and what does not

Changes: transfer bonuses and their end dates, the award prices and fees each program charges, and which seats are available on any given day. Treat every number above as a worked example from August 2026.
Does not change: that these five programs share one Avios currency, that they price partner awards independently of each other, that linked accounts let you book through the cheapest one, and that the account waiting periods have to be served before you need them.
